Books love to speak @ Bachpan
Established in the year 2004, Bachpan began its phenomenal journey. During all the times of development of a child-centric and quality Montessori education, Bachpan learnt an art of innovation. Innovation of teaching processes, techniques and tools what it aimed at. The entire curriculum development team was deployed to think of including a powerful learning content to foster long-term and fun-filled learning to toddlers. We never aimed at stopping at the kind of teaching that happens just with a black-board and some Montessori toys. We looked for something which can stand out exemplarily in the field of preschool education. In a meeting one day, a team member murmured, “Oh! I wish if books could speak!” There we were! We asked her to repeat what she just said. Hesitantly, she said, “I wish if books could speak!” Why not? Was that easy? Not at all! The real struggle had begun by then. We knew it would require a lot of effort and thought process to create something that would enable books to speak. The brainstorming began. There were ample of researches that were studied in detail and even done at our own end. It was then decided that a Bachpan will be proud to create its own kit which would contain a pen and a book which shall speak. This kit was called ‘Speak-o-Kit’. Prismart, the technical arm at Bachpan was at the developing end of the kit. They wished to programme a pen in such a manner which shall speak up the word on which it is pointed at in a book. To a sweet surprise, we finally developed a functional speak-o-pen which the nation today commonly calls as a set of talking books and talking pens. What an elixir formula proving to be a breakthrough in the teaching-learning process. At the point of reaching a number of 1000 school nationwide in 2014, Bachpan finally gave the world of primary school education, a gift called ‘Speak-o-kit’. It was indeed an important event and a matter of celebration. We celebrated to a matter of fact that being the first school to introduce a phenomenal tech-tool will now serve kids and make the learning experiential. At this, we also realized that nothing is impossible. If we plan and implement techniques systematically, it is possible to develop innovative learning tools that the world could never imagine. We still remember the first demonstration of the Speak-o-pen in the schools. The parents, teachers and the little children were awestruck. They were ready to purchase it at any price we decide. But, we planned to keep it under a price range which is affordable to every parent and no child is devoid of a tool which they can have an easy access to. Every new thing requires a considerable amount of basic training given to the users. A child needs to be taught how to use the speak-o-kit in the best way possible. The training session for the teachers and parents was the next in the bag. We trained our teachers to the core so that they are able to communicate the benefits and usage to the parents. There is no more fun to a kid than pointing a pen towards the picture of a fruit in a book and the pen telling him that ‘It’s an Orange’.
